ART AS A WONDER OF A CHANGING SOCIETY. IN SEPTEMBER IN SCICLI “EX MACHINA” PROJECT TRANSFORMS THE BAROQUE TOWN INTO A LIVING THEATRE

SCICLI (RG) – The town of Scicli hosts the new contemporary art exhibition curated by Site Specific and aA29 Art Project gallery, under the artistic direction of Rosa Cascone and Lara Gaeta.

Friday, September 4th, 2020 at 7 p.m., at the Ex Convento del Carmine in Scicli, opens EX MACHINA, an original contemporary art project. For three days, from the 4th to the 6th of September, the monumental UNESCO spaces of Scicli become the scene of site-specific interventions, performances, exhibitions, sound installations, concerts, conferences and guided tours.

The project involves ten artists: Valentino Bianchi, Francesco De Grandi, Alex Majoli, Lola Montes Schnabel, Parasite 2.0, Isabella Pers, Tiziana Pers, Matilde Sambo, Giuseppe Stampone and Sasha Vinci. Their works investigate the theme of EX MACHINA in different ways, according to their artistic research and style, thus activating a reflection that finds an immediate response in the contemporary political and social debate.

The site-specific interventions designed for the Ex Convento del Carmine and Palazzo Bonelli Patanè will be available until Sunday, October 4th.

EX MACHINA is the result of shared objectives between Site Specific independent reality and aA29 Art Project gallery. The two institutions operate in the field of contemporary art and share the same vision: promoting projects that aim at new possibilities of action and interaction with each other, by paying particular attention to the topics of sustainability, Anthropocene, anti-speciesism and incidence of totalitarianism and colonialism on contemporary history.

The artistic direction also included the participation of four personalities from the art world, invited as Observers: Laura Barreca (Director of the Civic Museum of Castelbuono and Director of the Museum of Arts of Carrara | mudaC), Maurizio Bortolotti (Critic, Independent Curator and Lecturer at NABA in Milan), Rossella Farinotti (Executive Director of the Gio’ Pomodoro Archive) and Diego Mantoan (Lecturer at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and Independent Curator). Their role is to produce a critical contribution by establishing opportunities for public debate and art meetings called “comizi” on the themes expressed by the project and on the artists’ poetics.

The event takes its name from the concept of “deus ex machina” of the classic Greek theatre, which defined the moment in which God appeared on the stage, becoming the resolving element of the whole tragedy. In this sense, the festival connects with the urban fabric through site-specific interventions and converts the town of Scicli – which is already surrounded by hills – into a Living Theatre, an agorà open to the discussion between the art and the public.

EX MACHINA was born with the purpose of highlighting the current need to emerge from the mechanicalness and automatism defining our society. Literally, it means “getting out of the machine” to re-establish contact with nature. However, taking distance from the machine and the automated does not mean denying technological and scientific developments, but using them as tools to become aware of the present time and its complexity.

The subjects addressed during the event are developed in this direction: going back to natural and inner time, the art as wonder at a transforming society and the interaction with the public space by the artists as active elements of the system – and not unrelated to it.

The project is sponsored by the Municipality of Scicli. Other partners include SEM Cultural Association, Agire Social Cooperative, Scicli Albergo Diffuso, Leftover, Bianca Millan logistic planning.

A significant part of the event is also dedicated to the contemporary and traditional Sicilian music. During the whole weekend, it is also possible to join tastings of Ragusa culinary tradition and the vegetarian cuisine.
